New Connections

Some facts about Connection Costs:

  • In Ontario, customers pay to connect to their electrical distribution systems (the poles and wires providing power in the community).

  • In the communities that Hydro One Remotes serves, usually the Band requests and pays for new connections.

  • Hydro One Remotes does not make a profit on new connections: we charge actual costs $ and try to save the band money by combining new connections with other work in the community.

Calculating Connection Costs:

  • Sometimes customer connections can be relatively simple and inexpensive if all that is required is a meter and wire.

  • Some connections are costly, if more poles are needed, or if transformers are added or replaced.

  • Labour costs, equipment needed, service size, heating type and number of trips to the community are factors that affect the cost of connection.

Other Considerations:

  • Can the work be completed while we are already in your community on other business?

  • Can we complete the work while en-route to another community during the “fly-by”?

  • Is the new connection near existing poles?

  • Shipping costs of larger materials.

  • The season: costs can be 25%-50% higher if work is done during winter months.

  • Other issues such as bedrock complications, contractor delays, and other factors.
